The University of St. Thomas lacrosse team is excited to announce its incoming class for the 2012 season. The group features ten incoming freshmen, as well as three transfer students. Head Coach Peter Moosbrugger noted, “As a coaching staff, we worked very hard to assemble the best recruiting class we could, and I’m thrilled with the group we’ve put together. I expect these guys to compete for playing time on day one and have an immediate impact on the field.” Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Ian Gallagher added: “I’m very excited about the group we have coming in, and I can’t wait to see these guys in purple and white in a few weeks!”
Matt Kleven – Prior Lake High School- A versatile offensive player who can play both attack and midfield, Matt played four years on varsity, and was named captain for his senior year. Matt was named second team all-section his junior year, and first team all-section and all-conference his senior year after tallying 27 goals and 10 assists. During high school, Matt also played three summers for the Minnesota Frost select team and played on the varsity hockey team for Pror Lake.
Zach Whiteis – Prior Lake High School- Also joining the Tommies from Prior Lake will be midfielder Zach Whiteis. An athletic midfielder, Zach was fourth in points among midfielders in 2011 while playing for the Lakers. Zach joined teammate Matt Kleven in helping Prior Lake make the post-season their senior year, eventually losing in the section playoffs.
John Michael Coon – Wayzata High School- John Michael joins the Tommies after playing three years on varsity for Wayzata High School, where he was the top-scoring midfielder in 2011 for the Trojans, scoring 17 goals and 8 assists. He was named second team all-section his senior year, and first team all-conference both his junior and senior years. John Michael also played three summers with the Minnesota Yeti select team.
Joe Garrison- White Bear Lake Area High School- As a midfielder from White Bear Lake, Joe played two years on varsity, and was a captain his senior year. He was named first team all-conference as a junior and first team all-section his senior year. During the 2011 season, in which White Bear advanced to the final four of the Minnesota state tournament, Joe scored 16 goals and 4 assists, as well as winning 172 of 211 (81.5%) face-offs he took.
Nick Altmann – Eden Prairie High School- Nick was a three-year varsity player at attack for the Eagles. During his time on varsity, Eden Prairie qualified for the post-season all three years, including being the state runner-up in 2011. Nick scored six goals and four assists during his senior season. Nick also played on Eden Prairie’s summer team, Eagles Elite for the past three years.
Geoff Anderson – Edina High School- Geoff comes to St. Thomas after playing on Edina’s varsity team the past two seasons. As a senior attackman, Geoff was the team’s second leading scorer with 25 points (14 g, 11a). Geoff also played for Edina’s summer team, as well as playing for the Minnesota Elite select team.
Peter Schubloom – Benilde-St. Margaret’s School- During his three years on varsity at Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Peter played both midfield and attack for the Minnesota 2010 and 2011 state champions. He was named a captain for the 2011 season, and recorded 39 points on 8 goals and 31 assists. Peter also was a member of the Minnesota Elite team the summers of 2008, 2009, and 2010.
Paul Duckstad – Lakeville South High School- As a midfielder for Lakeville South, Paul spent three years on the varsity team. As a captain during the 2011 season, Paul led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 10 assists. In addition, he received numerous awards, including the team Outstanding Offensive Player and MVP, as well as being named to the all-conference and first team all-section teams. Paul also played for the Minnesota Frost summer select team.
Nick Boyce – Minnetonka High School- Nick comes to St. Thomas after playing three years on varsity at Minnetonka. During those three years, Nick played three different positions: midfield in 2009, LSM in 2010, and close defense in 2011. During his time with the Skippers, Nick helped the team reach the postseason all three years, highlighted by their first-ever Minnesota State Championship in lacrosse in 2009.
Josh Sickler – Eden Prairie High School- Josh was a three-year varsity player at close defense for Eden Prairie. Josh joined high school teammate, and fellow Tommie recruit, Nick Altmann in helping the Eagles make the post-season all three years, including being the state runner-up in 2011. Josh also played lacrosse for the Pro Image Elite team, and played varsity football while at Eden Prairie.
Dan Ziegler –Pioneer High School (Ann Arbor, MI)- Dan played three years on varsity for Ann Arbor Pioneer high school, where he was a midfielder and FOGO. As a junior, Dan set the school record for face-off win percentage in a season. Dan also played for Pioneer High School’s select team, and with Ann Arbor United.
Ned Wolff – Minnetonka High School/Iowa State University- Ned transfers to St. Thomas after spending his freshman year at Iowa State. Originally from Minnetonka, Ned was a four year varsity player at Minnetonka High School, where he was a captain his senior season, and was the Parisi Award Winner for leadership and a member of the state championship team in 2009. As an attackman for the Cyclones last year, Ned led the team in scoring, with 19 points (6g, 13a) in 9 games, and was Honorable Mention to the UMLL All-Conference team.
Ben Vasko – Hill-Murray School (Maplewood, MN)/Arizona State University- A transfer from Arizona State, Ben played two years for the Sun Devils, and was named an MCLA All-America Honorable Mention and to the MCLA All-Tournament team in 2011 as an LSM. Ben attended the Hill-Murray School in Maplewood, MN, where he played two years on the varsity lacrosse team. His senior year, Ben was a captain, and was named all-conference and all-section. In addition to lacrosse, Ben was a two-year starter at outside linebacker on the football team at Hill-Murray.
Giuseppe Palermo – Totino-Grace High School (Fridley, MN)/Quinnipiac University- A midfielder, Giuseppe transfers to St. Thomas after spending his freshman year at Quinnipiac University, where he played in nine games. Giuseppe attended Totino-Grace High School in Fridley, MN. While leading the Eagles to a state runner-up finish in 2010, he was named an All-American, First Team All-State, and Team MVP as a senior captain. Giuseppe was also named all-conference and all-section as both a junior and senior. During his senior season, Giuseppe scored 68 points (44 g, 24 a), and won 121-of-160 face-offs, as well as voted finalist for the inaugural 2010 Mr. Lacrosse award. Giuseppe also played lacrosse for the Minnesota Elite select team, and football at Totino-Grace, where he was a three-year varsity letter winner and all-conference outside linebacker. Joe will play football and lacrosse for the Tommies.
