After a close first quarter, St. Thomas lacrosse pulled away from Oakland University (Michigan) and gained a 19-4 victory Saturday night. A nice crowd of UST fans made the 45-minute trek south to the dome at Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault, MN.
The Tommie offense was led by middie Cooper Mazon (So.) and attack Joe Costello (Jr.) with five goals each. Proving to also be a key setup man, Costello, chipped in six assists. Six other Tommies also scored goals, including attack JJ Griesinger (Jr.) - his first as a Tommie!
Derek Michalski, (Sr.) and Dan Soukup (Sr.) once again led a stingy defense and provided stellar leadership on those few occasions when Oakland was able to apply pressure. Tommie goalie, Stephen Bang (Fr., Burnsville), got his first taste of collegiate action in the Oakland game. Bang, playing the entire second half looked quick and poised, giving up only one goal. Andrew Larson (Sr.) continued his faceoff dominance by winning seven face-offs and middie Tony Sadder (Sr.) scooped six ground balls.
Many thanks to Mr. Dan Michalski (Derek Michalski's father) for photographing the game. His photos can be found at: tommielacrosse2010.shutterfly.com
Visiting photographer Steve Sanner was also on hand and his photos are available on his website at:
