The weekend action began on Friday night, as the Tommies took on the Northern Colorado Bears from the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference.  St. Thomas got off to a quick start, as junior midfielder Cooper Mazon and sophomore attackman Pete Carbonneau each notched two early goals. The Tommies scored eight straight goals on their way to a 10-3 final.

Bloodied, but unstoppable was Senior Joe Costello

Saturday night’s contest had the Tommies facing the Davenport Panthers, a team that St. Thomas had met in the national semifinals each of the past two years.  Davenport had gotten their weekend off to a good start, defeating St. John’s University 10-8 on Friday night.  Against St. Thomas, the Panthers picked up right where they left off, roaring out to a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter.  But the Tommies continued to grind, and cut Davenport’s lead to just one goal at the half, led by Carbonneau’s two second quarter goals.  With some key defensive adjustments at halftime, and goals from senior attackman Joe Costello and freshman midfielder Will Hersman, St. Thomas kept their momentum going in the third quarter, taking a 7-6 lead that they would not relinquish.  Mazon added two goals in the fourth, and Carbonneau and Costello each added one, as St. Thomas secured an 11-8 win.

St. Thomas’s final test of the weekend was the Missouri State Bears from the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference.  The Tommies gained the early advantage, outscoring the Bears 4-0 in the first quarter and taking a 7-3 lead into the half.  In the second half, St. Thomas continued to play efficient offense and tough defense, and came away with a 17-8 victory.  The Tommies were led by stellar sophomore efforts on both sides of the ball.  Defensively, sophomore goalie Steven Bang got the start in net and turned in a strong first half performance.  On the offensive side, midfielder Matt Nanne scored two goals and attackman David Burke tallied four goals and three assists.
