As the final horn sounded on Sunday’s 15-7 win, the smile on Tommie Head Coach Pete Moosbrugger’s face was a little larger than normal. And with good reason. Coach Moosbrugger picked up his 100th win as the Tommies head coach.
Records and milestones are very difficult to achieve, especially ones that require great longevity. Since taking the helm of the team in 2003, “Moose” as he’s affectionately known, has turned the program into one of the most dominating and respected lacrosse programs in the nation. What’s special about these 100 wins is how they were accomplished - with hard work, persistence and integrity.
Back in 2003 Moose took over a team that graduated almost all its players and was a true rebuild. The team struggled to a 2-12 record, but Moose never looked at it as a failure. He continued to push his players to be better and pushed himself to learn and develop as a coach.
2003 would the only losing season St. Thomas has ever had under his tenure. 2004 saw a new look team, rebuilt on the foundations of hard work and the team concept. The next 4 years would be the rise to power, and until finally a national championship. Since then there has been no looking back.
Moose did it by knowing when to add talented coaches such as Jim Reilly, John Sprenzel, Teddy Hobbins, Ian Gallagher, Colin Achenbach, Rob Horn and Brian Gross. He also has had the help of some truly amazing players. Moose is the first one to play down his accomplishments, and he is quick to give credit. But with a career 77% winning percentage it’s clear that he has accomplished a lot.
One thing worth noting on these 100 wins, is the lone member of the UST family that has been with him for all of them. Coach Brian Gross. As a player and as a coach he has been a part of each win. So to Mr. Gross, congratulations are in order to you as well.
Upon accepting the award Coach Moosbrugger thanked the Alumni, Parents and Players, but it’s us that should be thanking him. As someone that coached by his side in that 2003 season, he always saw the champions that St. Thomas could be and never gave up on that dream. Congratulations Coach Moosbrugger, and again, thank you for your dedication.
